Grass Roots Award Winners

The 39th annual Democrat Days was held at Hannibal over the past weekend, March 5 and 6. One of the highlights each year is the presentation of the Clarence Cannon "Grass Roots" Worker of the Year award. The recipients this year, pictured above, were Rogers and Jerri Hewitt, Shelbyville. Family members present to help with the award were daughter, Paula Perry and son-in-law, Jim Perry, Bethel.

New City Water Lines Could Stop The Drip; Public Hearing On Nuisance Building Scheduled

The Clarence City Council met for their regular monthly meeting Monday night, March 8, at the Clarence City Hall with all present. Mayor James Watson called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.

The first order of business was asking for public comment, which there was none.

Present at the meeting was Shannon Howe, representing Benton & Associates, Inc., a consulting engineers/land surveyors firm from Macon addressed the board about a new water system. The board was very upset over the recent water breaks and the solving of the situation.

Howe said they had monitored the situation of the recent water breaks with the firm putting together a package on upgrading the cast iron pipes on the main lines that are now costing the city more money than a new system would cost.

Public Hearing. Clarence Fire Chief Bill Hall said following the past months meeting about the nuisance buildings on the south side of town, something must be done as they are dangerous. City Attorney Jim McConnell explained to the council the procedue to have building demolished in relations to public safety.

A letter has been sent to the owner of the buildings which as been done. Next is the setting of a public hearing for the buildings in question. The council then set a date for a public hearing to be held on the Sizemore buildings for Monday, March 22nd at 6:30 p.m. at the city hall.

The council also appointed a building commissioner to aid the fire chief in inspecting buildings as a city ordinance states. City Superintendent Dennie Carothers was given this job.
